Out of Site 2012

Thank you to all of our artists, curator Earl Miller, MuchFACT, our Out of Site commitee (Spencer Sutherland, Elana White), participating businesses and the volunteers who made Out of Site 2012 a great success!

The Queen St. West B.I.A. in association with MuchFACT and MuchMusic is pleased to announce Out of Site, its fourth annual all-night exhibition of art and music by Canadian Artists.

The date for Out of Site is September 29-30, from dusk till dawn.

Out of Site 2012 features:

MuchFACT: Under The Stars a free outdoor film screening
An exhibition curated by Earl Miller featuring work by six important Toronto artists and collectives
Scotiabank Nuit Blanche Independent Projects
Independent art installations and art windows throughout Queen St. West between Simcoe and Bathurst

Curated by Earl Miller, Out of Site 2012 features art work and performances by important Toronto artists and dancers: Natasha Bailey, Theo Pelmus & Ulysses Castellanos, Bentley & Simon Jarvis, Adam Nashman & Nicola Pantin, Tania Ursomarzo, and the Workparty collective. Their work all draws from the vibrant Queen Street West neighbourhood, with its rich cultural history and its current stature as a media, retail and restaurant centre.

The Future Streetscape of Queen St.West

Urban Toronto’s Dumitru Onceanu summarizes our Jane’s Walk and streetscape master plan ideas in the article below. The Queen St. West BIA has hired PMA Landscape Architects (working with Chris Hardwicke of &Co and Janos Badovinac of Fugitive Glue) to create a Streetscape Master Plan. The final design will be revealed in November 2012.

Over $50,000 raised for the Starlight Foundation of Canada

Over $50,000 was raised for the Starlight Foundation of Canada during this year’s Torontoland Snowman campaign. The Queen St. West BIA was proud to take part in this initiative with Tourism Toronto. Thank you to everyone who participated! Below is a photo our our snowman, designed by artist Melinda Josie.

Outstanding Capital Streetscape Improvement Award

On October 26th, 2011 TABIA hosted the inaugural Toronto BIA recognition awards. We were nominated and won in the category of Outstanding Capital Streetscape Improvement Award for our custom designed bike racks by OCAD University Students Michael Pham (Halo) and Evi K. Hui and Olivier Mayrand (Speech Bubbles). BIA Chair Spencer Sutherland and Executive Director Laura Schaefer were present to accept the award from Councillor Michael Thompson, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, and TABIA President Michael Comstock.

A special thank you to our past chair Marc Glassman and the jury of the design contest–Councillor Vaughan, Lisa Rochon and Justin Garak, OCAD University, designers Michael Pham, Evi K. Hui and Olivier Mayrand, and Raj Kumar at the City of Toronto for all of their hard work on this project. It continues to put Queen St. West on the map!
